2026 Fall Core KickStart

Rec Soccer is AYSO Irvine's recreational program, often called Core or Rec. AYSO Irvine welcomes players of all levels, and designs our programs based on age, with more than just soccer skills in mind. If your child has special needs, please check out our EPIC / VIP program.

We are not just a soccer program, we are a children's program designed around soccer.

This is a purely volunteer-based program, and the success of the program comes from enough parents being willing to volunteer.

Our age divisions are as follows:
  • 4U - Children born 8/1/2022 to 7/31/2023
  • 5U - Children born 8/1/2021 to 7/31/2022
  • 6U - Children born 8/1/2020 to 7/31/2021
  • 7U - Children born 8/1/2019 to 7/31/2020
  • 8U - Children born 8/1/2018 to 7/31/2019
  • 10U - Children born 8/1/2016 to 7/31/2018
  • 12U - Children born 8/1/2014 to 7/31/2016
  • 14U - Children born 8/1/2012 to 7/31/2014
  • 16U - Children born 8/1/2010 to 7/31/2012
  • 19U - Children born 8/1/2007 to 7/31/2010

Our website will automatically display the proper age division for your child based on the year of birth you entered for them. Children are not permitted to play in a division that doesn't match the aforementioned years. We do not have any programs for children born after 7/31/2023 for this season.

For 5U and older age divisions

Matches (i.e. games):
Matches for 7U and older, and sessions for 5U/6U (see below), are expected to be every Saturday for nine to ten weeks starting Saturday, September 12, 2026. Exact times and field locations are currently unknown, and won't be known to us until very late August or very early September, when our teams are formed and the City's field allocations are provided to us.

Training (i.e. practices):
5U/6U: Training and scrimmages are combined into one session on Saturdays (i.e. nothing on the weekdays). Training is provided to a few teams at a time by a professional coach for about 40 minutes, then our volunteer scrimmage monitors manage a scrimmage for about 30 minutes.
7U: training is one weekday per week for one hour. Exact day of the week, time, and location is determined by your assigned head coach, and thus won't be known until teams are formed, and coaches assigned, in late August, possibly very early September.
8U and older: training is two weekdays per week for one hour. Exact day of the week, time, and location is determined by your assigned head coach, and thus won't be known until teams are formed, and coaches assigned, in late August, possibly very early September.

None of our Core/Rec teams of any age train (i,e. practice) on Fridays.

Your registration fee includes:
  • Uniform (Jersey, shorts (6U and older and possibly 5U), soccer socks(6U and older and possibly 5U))
  • Photographs (likely 1 - 5 x 7 team photo (6U and older), 4 - wallets (of your player), 1 - 3" button (of your player))
  • Recognition award (likely trophy or medal)

Players must purchase if they don't own, and bring to each practice/match:
  • A properly inflated size 3 soccer ball
  • Shin guard covered by soccer socks
  • Closed-toe shoes (soccer cleats strongly recommended)
  • A water bottle

Cost for the entire season: $190 (+ $25 AYSO Annual National Fee which also covers Winter Skills '26 and Spring '27 + $3.50 service fee charged by our platform).

4U division - Coed

Matches (i.e. games):
None - Children at 4U do not challenge for the ball.

Training (i.e. practices):
Training is on Saturdays only (i.e. nothing on the weekdays). Training is provided by a professional coach for about 40 minutes.

Your registration fee includes:
  • Jersey
  • (Sep 12 to October 10 Season Only) Photographs (likely 1 - 5 x 7 team photo (6U and older), 4 - wallets (of your player), 1 - 3" button (of your player))
  • Recognition award (likely trophy or medal)

Players must purchase if they don't own, and bring to each session:
  • A properly inflated size 3 soccer ball
  • Shin guard covered by soccer socks recommended, but not required
  • Closed-toe shoes (soccer cleats strongly recommended)
  • A water bottle

Cost for each five-week "season:" $75 (+ $25 AYSO Annual National Fee which also covers Winter Skills '26 and Spring '27 + $3.50 service fee charged by our platform).

2026 Fall Upper Division

Once players are a certain age (roughly high school - although AYSO age cutoffs don't precisely match high school ages), AYSO combines the Extra and Rec (Core) programs into a single gaming circuit. That means some teams in the 16U and 19U gaming circuits will consist entirely of Extra players, entirely of Rec (Core) players, or a mixture of both.

Further, at this age, becoming a coach that is new to AYSO is difficult as there are three in-person coach courses that are required by AYSO to coach at this age:
12U, Intermediate, and Advanced (some USSF coaching licenses may satisfy some or all of the required coach courses - see this page.)

As such, it can be difficult to find coaches for the upper division teams. And because these teams play 11 v. 11, it may be hard to get enough players to form a team, or the number of interested players may not translate to properly-sized rosters.

Accordingly, we frequently are required to hold tryouts at 16U and 19U when we have more players than coaches, or the number of interested players we have doesn't translate to properly-sized rosters.

Further, in some upper divisions, we don't even have enough players or a coach, so we don't even attempt a tryout as we know we cannot form a team. If you don't see your division listed in the tryout link, below, it's because we don't anticipate being to form a team. If you do see your division in the in the tryout link, below, but the date and time is TBD, then we are optimistic we will be able to form at least one team. However, there is no cost to registering for tryouts, so we encourage you to register for tryouts even if your division is not listed in the tryouts link, below.

Tryouts

Tryout Dates/Times/Locations: Will be provided to all registered players on or around August 10, 2026. Will likely be the week of August 17.

Tryouts are open to all age eligible players and traditionally happen once to twice each year. Other than age eligibility, there are no limits on who can tryout. You do NOT need to have ever played for AYSO to tryout.

The upcoming tryout is for Fall 2026 only.

There is NO FEE to tryout, though all players must register for the tryout. We may limit email notifications to those who register for tryouts, so please signup for tryouts early if registration is open.

Costs (If Invited): $350.00 per season plus AYSO national annual player fee (currently $25.00 and covers all AYSO programs in the nation from August 1 to the following July 31). A uniform is included. Upper division is more expensive because we offer upper division coaches professional trainers.

Schedule (If Invited): Spring matches typically start early March and end mid-May. Fall matches typically start early September and end mid-November. Typically, one match per Saturday during the season, with a rare Sunday match or two-Saturday matches. Some teams will make playoffs in Fall, and playoffs can extend into mid-December. Practices usually start about three weeks before the first match and end at the last match.

Travel For Matches (If Invited): Half of the matches will be in Irvine. Away matches will be mostly within Orange County, with a few matches in the south of Los Angeles County.

What is AYSO EPIC?


The mission of the AYSO EPIC Program is to provide athletes with disabilities the additional support they need to fully participate in a quality soccer experience. The ultimate goal of the AYSO EPIC Program is to provide a holistic AYSO experience for players, families, and volunteers, from team uniforms, to playing on a team, to cheering from the sidelines, for all participants.

AYSO Irvine accepts EPIC players age 5 through adult.
