AYSO Irvine Region 213 - Serving Irvine for 40 years

EXTRA PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The EXTRA Program offers a more advanced level of competition for players who possess the appropriate skills, commitment, and abilities. The program provides development opportunities similar to club soccer though maintains the core AYSO philosophies – including a guarantee that all players will play at least half of every game. And all at 20% of the cost of a typical soccer club.  Players are selected through a competitive tryout process.

Tryouts are open to all age eligible players and traditionally happen once each year, typically December or January.  Other than age eligibility, there are no limits on who can tryout. You do NOT need to have ever played for AYSO to tryout.

When we are able to conduct two tryout sessions…attendance at both tryouts is strongly encouraged, but not required.

There is NO FEE to tryout, though all players must register for the tryout.  We may limit email notifications to those who register for tryouts, so please signup for tryouts early if registration is open.

If you are interested in playing 2026 Spring Rec if your player is not invited to the Extra team, please register for 2026 Spring Rec now. As the registration close date approaches, some divisions may become waitlisted. If your player is invited to Extra, we will transfer 100% of you fees towards Extra, and you will only have to pay the balance.

Costs (If Invited): Tentatively $325.00 per season plus AYSO national annual player fee (currently $25.00 and covers all AYSO programs in the nation from August 1 to the following July 31) plus uniform costs direct from our vendor.  (Program fees will be finalized by the region before invitations are sent.)

Schedule (If Invited): Spring matches typically start early March and end mid-May.  Fall matches typically start early September and end mid-November.  Typically, one match per Saturday during the season, with a rare Sunday match or two-Saturday matches.  Some teams will make playoffs in Fall, and playoffs can extend into mid-December.  Practices are in Irvine twice a week on weekdays, excluding Fridays, for 90 minutes each practice and practices usually start about three weeks before the first match and end at the last match.  The practice weekdays, times, and field within Irvine are selected by the head coach.

Travel For Matches (If Invited): Half of the matches will be in Irvine.  Away matches will be mostly within Orange County, with a few matches in the south of Los Angeles County.

EXTRA TRYOUTS

EXTRA TRYOUTS

We are conducting tryouts for many of our Spring 2026 and Fall 2026 Extra teams. So, those of you looking for an advanced and challenging soccer experience for your child…we encourage them to come tryout. To register for tryouts, log into our website (ayso213.org) and select "2026 Spring And Fall Extra" from our available programs.  It's free to register and tryout.  Please register at least 24 hours before the first session, below.  Ideally as soon as possible in case we send communications only to those that are registered.  There is no downside to registering early - even if your player changes their mind about trying out.

These tryouts are for both the Spring 2026 and Fall 2026 Extra teams.  In other words, if your player is invited to the team, we would be asking that they commit to two seasons.

There are two sessions for each age group, please try and attend both if possible!  You do not have to pick which session(s) you attend in advance.  Registration permits you to come at either or both sessions, depending on your schedule.

The schedule below, which is subject to change, is based on gender and birth date.  (Please note that for our 2026 Extra teams, we are no longer using calendar-year birthday cutoffs.)

EXTRA - BECOME A COACH

Do you love coaching soccer?
If you might be interested in becoming a coach for our AYSO Extra Program, click here to apply:

2026 Extra Coach Application

We may select coaches as soon as December 3, 2025, so please apply by December 2, 2025 to guarantee that your application is considered.  (If we have not accepted a head coach for a given team, we will review applications up until we select the head coach for the team.)

Typically, if we receive an application for a qualified head coach and their child is not already on an Extra team, we will defer a decision on the head coach role until after tryouts because the head coach’s child automatically makes the team, so the coach committee must evaluate both the coach and their player in making the selection.  We ask that all head coach applicants attend both tryouts and observe so they are prepared to help select a team if they are selected.
