Fusion is the name of North Irvine AYSO's EXTRA program. (Some people call it "Flex" and still other people call it "Plus." But AYSO's proper name for this level of play is EXTRA.)
The AYSO Section 11 EXTRA program is for players born during the years 2001 to 2011 (boys & girls). The EXTRA program is designed to give AYSO players an opportunity to experience a more competitive level of soccer play without incurring the cost, time commitment, and travel required of club soccer, while still adhering to the AYSO philosophies. Also, in contrast with club soccer, all players are guaranteed at least half a game of playing time. Players on an AYSO EXTRA team will play their primary season in the Fall, but individual teams will often play in other AYSO and club tournaments throughout the year, as well as a spring league. The level of play for an EXTRA team is at about the Bronze (or Flight 3) level of club soccer, and some AYSO EXTRA teams actually play at a higher level. |
The cycle begins with tryouts in January or February for the coming FALL season, and the team usually continues on in the following Spring. Teams have a pre-season camp in late July or early August. They also often do a few tournaments throughout the year, depending on the coach/team choices.
Coaches are selected by a Region executive committee based on experience, background, and their standing as qualified representatives of Region 213 by a Selection Committee, and then voted on by the board. They are required to have proper coaching levels for the division they are coaching, and also be certified as referees. For more information, check with the Regional Coach Administrator or contact the Advanced Play Coordinator.
Players are selected by a try-out process. The process is primarily coach selection but within strict guidelines based on the tryouts that push for a competitive team. In other words, the coach doesn't have the freedom to just pick anyone because of friendships or favors.
